Burning Boundaries – Elemental Evidence Book Two,
by Bellora Quinn and Sadie Rose Bermingham

Rating: 5.0 stars

BLURB

Their passion isn’t the only thing creating flames.

Mari Gale’s life has been a whirlwind since meeting Jake Chivis. A new job prospect and his mother’s health preoccupy him, so when Jake invites him on a date he’s ready to cut loose. Their night out turns into a nightmare when a fire breaks out in the basement of the bar and they barely escape.

Soon Jake learns that the horrific accident is being investigated as a possible homicide, and it’s not the only case. Detective Inspector Cordiline of the London Met hints at spontaneous human combustion, but as far as Jake knows, SHC doesn’t exist.

When Mari looks into a group called Birthright, he finds a connection to the victims of the fires and Jake risks himself to go undercover at the shadowy organization. The race is on to determine the truth before Jake becomes the next target.

BURNING BOUNDARIES

I had been patiently awaiting this sequel to Breathing Betrayal and was so excited when it came out, my only regret is that because life happens it’s taken me a minute to write this long deserved review. This is an excellent series that I hope continues as I feel these characters have still a ways to go in their story.

THE CHARACTERS

Jake Chivis:

A smile twitched his lips again as he thought of Jake Chivis, part-Irish, part-Native American and a fellow Elemental. Jake had been a detective with the Detroit PD in a former life, before SEWN— the Six Elements Worldwide Network research program— had brought him to London, throwing him together with Mari as if that was their destiny.

Chivis was a trained inquisitor, even without his Elemental talents. His element was Fire and his gift was enabled through physical contact with material objects.

Ilmarinen (Mari) Gale:

While Jake couldn’t really remember a time when Mari wasn’t smartly dressed, he’d certainly put some extra effort in tonight. His nearly white blond locks were artfully messy and he wore a silvery, near-translucent tank top under a fitted, tan leather jacket and teal jeans that Jake already wanted to peel him out of.

THE STORY

The story picks up after Breathing Betrayal and we find Jake and Mari further along in their relationship, spending more time together and starting to finally enjoy each other, dating and going out and having fun when they are thrust into a series of incidents that start drawing them in.

As Mari and Jake become more entangled with investigating an obscure organization for MI5 as Jake is ‘drafted’ in to help, this dark organization for Elementals called Birthright turns out to have very sinister plans indeed. Not only do Jake and Mari discover the darker side of Elementals, they also discover new things about each other and their relationship.

Mari’s fascination with SM and his desire to be spanked is brought out by a Dom they meet in a bar during BDSM night. Colm Fleming not only has a keen interest in Mari, he also brings out the Dom in Jake and Jake’s willing, if hesitant, desire to satisfy Mari.

THE WRITING

The writing of these two authors is nothing if not absolutely superb. The story flows smoothly, at a good pace, allowing the characters to develop and grow naturally. The developing relationship between the two MC’s is like the every day progression we all experience in real life. Not progressing at blinding speeds, but at a more measured pace. There is the hesitancy and questioning and insecurities we all feel that are allowed to come out between Jake and Mari and we feel their angst and love grow.

I cannot wait for Elementals Book Three!

AUTHOR

A.E. Via has been a best-selling author in the beautiful gay romance genre for four years now, but she’s no stranger to MM. She’s been an avid reader of gay lit for over fifteen years before she picked up her laptop to place her own kiss on this genre. She’s also the founder and owner of Via Star Wings Books, having published a couple great new up and coming MM authors.
A.E. has a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Virginia Wesleyan College that she used to start her own paralegal firm after she graduated in 2008. She spent five years preparing and filing bankruptcy petitions for struggling blue collar workers who couldn’t afford to file with a lawyer. It was a rewarding and satisfying career… but another path called to me. Writing.
A.E.’s writing embodies everything from hopelessly romantic to adventure, to scandalous. Her stories often include intriguing edges and twists that take readers to new, thought-provoking depths.
Now that she’s gotten over her 10 books published hump, she’s kind of known now for her hardcore, play rough and love hard, bad boy, alphas. However, I do like to push myself to step out of my comfort zone, exploring with different tropes, but I won’t push myself into a whole other genre. I’m head over heels for gay romance and I have tons of more hot stories to tell.

PROPHESY

Prophesy

An Enemies to Lovers
Shifter, Vampire True Mates story.

Justice Volkov is the youngest Alpha Zenith to ever lead the wolf shifters. Following in his father’s large paw prints was a responsibility he met head on. Now at age thirty-three, he is alpha of the alphas. As a direct descendant of the original Siberian pack, his wolf is bigger and stronger than Justice, himself is sometimes able to control.

His wolf howled long and hard but Justice kept it inside. It felt like a bass drum beating against his rib cage. The harsh breaths, angry snarls and the determined pacing inside him was overtaking him.

Justice takes his role of leadership and his legacy very seriously. He has little time for romance, not to mention a true mate. His packs are his priority. With a human government trying to regulate them, an uprising of rogue shifters, and a violent team of scientists trying to experiment on them, Justice has his hands way too full.

Chadwick ‘Wick’ Bentley is not enthusiastic when the captain of his escort tells him he has to leave his comfortable London home and go back to the States. As the Vampire King, he has no choice but to get his species back in line before they cause anymore chaos. At over one-hundred years old, Wick is no one to trifle with, but his smooth, charismatic manner makes him quite unique, despite the negative reputation vampires have. Wick has had nothing but time up to this point. He doesn’t feel the need to make issues pressing. Nothing is urgent in his life. Until he meets Justice. His beloved.

“Natural enemies can’t be mates.” Or so Justice thought. He knows his skepticism and rejection is hurting his mate, so while he fights their connection, Wick gets help from a source very close to Justice to help him win his beloved’s heart. Wick is a force all on his own, but when he’s blessed with a special gift from the Mother herself, not even Justice’s powerful wolf can prevent the prophesy from being fulfilled.

This story DOES NOT contain/mention MPREG.
No multiple pairings. No cliffhangers. It ends with a very HFN.

Warning: This book is MM paranormal: If you DO NOT like hot, alpha men shifting into large wolves, or vampires feeding from their mates, this may not be your read.

EXCERPT

From Loggerhead by Dale Cameron Lowry

“I got up and pulled on the sweats Jake had gotten out for me the night before. The sweatshirt was dusky blue, faded from years of washings. He’d told me it was from his days running high school track in Florida. On the front was a line-drawing of a massive turtle and the words “Langford Loggerheads” printed in green beneath it.
Jake stirred, grumbling something under his breath as he turned onto his back and opened his eyes. When he saw me, he smiled. “You’re here,” he said with a degree of awe usually reserved for fireworks and the Grand Canyon.
“Of course I am.”
“I like seeing you in my clothes,” he said.
“I like being in them.” I couldn’t hold eye contact with him anymore. I wasn’t used to being looked at like one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. I pointed to the turtle on the front of his shirt. “Ever seen one in the wild?”
“I was a turtle guide for a few years before moving up here. You?”
I shook my head. “I’ve never been far south enough. I’ve always been curious, though. Ever since I read about them in Ranger Rick.”
“You read Ranger Rick when you were a kid, too? I knew you were perfect.”
I blushed. “Shut up.”
“I’m serious.” He sat up in bed and reached for my hips, pulling me back into the sheets with him. “We should go on a turtle walk sometime. I’ll take you back home for nesting season.”
“Take me home with you?” I teased. “Aren’t you moving a little fast?”
“No,” he said with the solid confidence only a 35-year-old in love can have. “Not at all.”

“#BookReview – Falling Hard by Dale Cameron Lowry @DaleCLowry #MMROMANCE #ANTHOLOGY”

Falling Hard

Rating: 5.0 stars

BLURB

Falling Hard features nine of Dale Cameron Lowry’s best short romance stories, available for the first time in one book. Meet a sign language interpreter who finds unexpected love at middle-age, college students in their first relationships, a vampire who would rather be a vegan, and a proudly gay ex-Mormon atheist who sells Bibles for a living. From sweet to erotic, this collection exhibits the quirkiness, fun, and diversity Dale’s writing is known for.

Falling Hard – The Anthology:

Reading and doing a review of Falling Hard was an easy yes for me as, fortunately, I had previously sampled some of Dale Cameron Lowry’s work and had really enjoyed it, so… being that there were new, as yet unread, stories in this anthology it was an easy, logical decision.

The stories are all excellent in their own right, each fully developed and highly enjoyable in their short story format. The stories ramp up in from mild to scorching hot as they go on in the book which makes for a really nice progression. The emotional and romantic quotient is there and the heat factor is definitely there.

Of course, I have my favorites as I’m sure you will too. Let me know which ones you favor.

Sit back and enjoy!

THE STORIES

• Mi Alma — Ex-Mormon Alma Larsen doesn’t know the first thing about alcohol, so he hires bartender Damian Banks to help out at his winter holiday party. They build a friendship that simmers with sexual tension—and possibly something much deeper.
• Loggerhead – Soon after they fall in love, Jake makes Eric a promise inspired by an old track uniform. But demanding work schedules at Jake’s four-star restaurant and Eric’s newspaper keep them from following through. Six years later, they take the honeymoon they never had, heading to the Florida coast in search of sea turtles—and rekindling their passion for each other in the process.
• Reading the Signs — The only thing twenty-three-year-old Theo De Jong expects when he enrolls in a summer school for linguists in New Mexico is to get more ideas for his master’s thesis in Dutch Sign Language. But then he meets the American sign language expert Alfonso Grossman, and sparks fly.
• Born of Fire — The fairies on Ireland’s north coast are notorious for kidnapping, and Aodhán of County Donegal has the scars to prove it. When the fairies abduct the handsome youth Cainnech, Aodhán seeks to free him—but risks losing his health and Cainnech in the process.
• Ghost of a Chance — When shy Jeremy Anderson meets mysterious and dapper Frank at his spooky old university library, their connection is instant. Their romance waxes with the full moon—but just as quickly, Frank’s interest seems to wane. He insists that he loves spending time with Jeremy, but then why does he keep Jeremy at arm’s length?
• Far From Home — Rajiv met and fell in love with his husband, Mateo, when they were both members of the scientific team responsible for transforming Mars into a home suitable for humans. But years into their shared mission, Rajiv is ordered back to Earth to restore the barren lands of the American Midwest. With a little help from technology, the two men find innovative ways to nurture their long-distance relationship while they wait to reunite.
• Sweeter Than Blood — Keith was a vegan before a hot encounter with a stranger turned him into a vampire. In the year since, his sire, John, has tried to make up for the mistake by teaching Keith everything he knows about being a non-murderous bloodsucker. But temptation is strong in the form of Andres, a regular customer at the barbershop where Keith works. When Andres finally asks Keith on a date, the real danger begins.
• Rough Love — Blake thinks new boyfriend Michael doesn’t like French kissing. Michael thinks Blake doesn’t like rough sex. Neither are virgins, except in the art of conversation. Can they set things straight before the honeymoon’s over?
• Pacific Rimming — On Mike’s fortieth birthday, his husband, Ken, takes him on vacation to Vancouver Island in Western Canada to celebrate. While Mike mourns his loss of youth, Ken encourages him to recapture it by bedding a gorgeous twenty-something man they encounter while hiking in Pacific Rim National Park. A night of no-holds-barred passion among the three men reveals a sizzling chemistry, and when Mike and Ken return home they find themselves longing to reconnect with the young Jason. Can what started as a one-night stand transform into a threesome that lasts?

Between Us, by F.E. Feeley Jr.

Between Us
Between Us

Rating: 4 stars

BLURB

When Jeremy, a tall, hunky, ladies man begins to explore his bisexual attractions, he realizes he loves his best friend and college roommate Roger.
Roger secretly loves Jeremy back but is holding on to a secret of his own. A terrible one.
On Halloween night both men are invited to a party where the truth of each other will be revealed in a horrific way. Will they survive a night of terror? Or will it rip them apart forever?

Between Us

One of my partners in crime, Lisa Arbitrary, recommended this novella to me and man do I owe her one back.

What a wonderfully fun, delicious piece of Halloween candy this morsel turned out to be. A great, sweet Halloween treat.

THE CHARACTERS

Roger:

“Jeremy watched as his five-foot-eight, one-hundred-and-ninety-pound best friend got up off the couch and put the Xbox controller back on the stand, and he felt a twinge in his heart.”

Hot, hunky Roger has been best friends with Jeremy since they were kids. Inseparable then and now, they’ve stayed best friends on into college. Except there’s one secret his never told Jeremy. No, not that he’s gay – Jeremy’s known that all along, it’s the fact that Roger’s a medium, a fact here discovered early on that his mother helped him deal with.

Jeremy:

“Unlike Roger, Jeremy was tall. At least six-three and had about fifty pounds on him. Roger was muscular, but Jeremy was no slouch either. They were night and day. Where Roger’s hair was light brown and short, Jeremy’s was pitch black and long. Where Roger was darker skinned and tan, Jeremy was pale. Where Jeremy was boisterous and the life of the party, Roger was more reserved and quiet.”

Jeremy has been Roger’s best friend through thick and thin and he was the first person that Roger told he was gay. No secrets between them, except one: Jeremy’s never told Roger he’s bisexual and that he’s fallen in love with his best friend.

THE STORY

What a fun, deliciously sweet story with just the right amount of angst. Gotta love some angst in my books, it’s like a fine spice.

Roger and Jeremy have been best friends their whole lives, sharing everything with each other. Well, almost everything. Roger’s never told Jeremy he’s a medium as he was taught to suppress this part of himself, and Jeremy’s never told Roger that he’s bisexual, much less that he’s fallen in love with his hunky best friend.

Now in college the two of them are roommates and come Halloween Jeremy’s ready to party. Halloween has always been a nightmare for Roger as the spirits are at their peak during Halloween, making for not such a fun time. To top it all off this is the time Jeremy picks to tell Roger that he’s bisexual and interested in dating Roger.

For 48 pages, this short novella delivers a great read just in time for Halloween!

THE WRITING

This is really good writing. In order to deliver the way this story did in 48 pages, you know it’s good writing. Every character is adequately and effectively developed for the story. The backstory of Roger and his mom is well done and the douchey frat boys are just right, not overdone, which could easily have happened, and the story ends just right.

I think I’ve found a new writer to follow!

Dark Blood, by Caleb James

Dark Blood
Dark Blood

Rating: 5 stars

BLURB

Handsome, brilliant, and surrounded by good friends, twenty-three-year-old medical student Miles Fox has a secret— and it’s not that he’s gay, though he harbors a crush on his straight best friend, Luke. Miles, like his grandmother, Anna, possesses the healing gift, an ability she’s made him swear never to use or divulge, lest horrible things befall those he loves. It happened to her when Nazis butchered her family.

But it all goes to hell when Miles heals a terminally ill man on a New Orleans cancer ward and wakes locked in the psych unit. Worse, news of the healing miracle spreads. For millennia its carriers have been hunted by those who would steal it. Dr. Gerald Stangl and his teenage son, Calvin, know what Miles possesses. They, like their predecessors, will stop at nothing to take it, including kidnapping, torture, and murder. As the Stangls’ noose tightens, Miles and Luke are trapped in a death match with stakes higher than they could ever imagine.

Dark Blood

I love it when a book takes me by surprise and delivers as well as this one did. Dark Blood checked off all my boxes: Contemporary M/M, Paranormal, Science Fiction, Historical, Detective Story… I mean, really? I got so into this book it’s not funny.

Such an original story line… The Holy Grail! The true meaning of the Holy Grail brought up to date, and then some, with such exquisite characters.

Read on, you won’t be able to put it down.

THE CHARACTERS

Miles Fox:

Handsome Miles Fox, born with the gift of healing and eternal life. The green eyed descendant of a long ago, almost extinct, race. A race of which we know not its origins, but that nonetheless persists. Miles has been kept in the dark about his abilities by his grandmother, Anna, for reasons of survival. As Miles becomes a man and goes to medical school, much to his grandmother’s consternation, he meets Luke Paxton, his best friend that he’s smitten with. It’s his relationship with Luke that becomes the pivotal moment of their existence.

Luke Paxton:

He looked at his best friend since starting medical school— Luke Paxton— twenty-three, born and raised in an ultraconservative Charlestown family, oldest of three, wicked sense of humor, and someone who’d apparently break a shitload of rules for a friend in trouble.

Luke, who’s fallen for his best friend, bringing out those feelings he’s long suppressed due to his upbringing and his ultra-conservative father. It’s his feelings for Miles that bring about the culmination to this wonderful story.

THE STORY

Talk about original! This book took me completely by surprise, out of left field. What an original story, and so well written, too.

Miles and his ability to heal. His grandmother, Anna, trying to protect him from those that are trying to steal this precious, ages old, ability. Luke, denying his true feelings in order to satisfy his stringent father, until he meets handsome Miles and then all bets are off. The one person who believes Miles regardless. The Stangls, father and son, descendants of a long line of seekers of the Holy Grail, finally close to achieving their goal via gruesome medical experiments of Miles’ progenitors and other hapless individuals.

What a brilliant, original story! I cannot recommend this book enough if you want to read something truly unique and exciting and completely off the same old rut.

I seriously cannot wait for the next book in this series, and there better be a next book!

THE WRITING

Flawless. Absolutely flawless. This kind of storytelling craft comes along rarely, so grab it while you can.

The story flows seamlessly, easily, allowing a total immersion into the book. Such rich developments of the characters, not just the MCs, also the secondary characters. The Stangls, father and son, so well crafted. Grandma Anna, the perfect protecting mother figure. Tomas, Miles’ great grandfather. Zosimus, Miles’ ancestor from antiquity. They’re all so well written wholly developed. What a joy to read.

Did a book ever call out to you because of the blurb and then you pick it up and it turns out way different in a strikingly good way? Well, this is what happened to me with Nate and The New Yorker. Talk about an awesome experience!

I read the blurb and I thought: cute, it’ll make some nice, easy summer reading. Well, let me tell you! At first I felt it was kind of slow and then quickly the story kicks into high gear and I literally couldn’t put it down. The twists and turns, the rich characters, the rich food, and the surprise about the surprising ex! Yeah, you really need to read this one. I’ve found a new author to follow.

THE CHARACTERS

Nathan:

Handsome Nathan, who still pines for his ex that he misses dearly, is the down to earth realist and self-sufficient man that captures Cameron’s fancy while on a vacation in Europe with his friends, Lucy and Ben. Nathan has never been able to let go and move beyond Elliot, his ex, who he still sees and talks to. Or does he? As he becomes more and more enamored of Cameron we find the real story within the story.

Cameron:

The culprit stood at the entrance of the restaurant. Shortly cropped dark hair. Rosy lips that curved as if a sculptor had created them by smoothing their surface with the tip of his finger. His stylishly knitted red sweater hung loosely, making his upper body a mystery. And thick black-rimmed glasses that had me picturing him on my couch, reading quietly before I’d slowly pull them off his face, exposing my own superhero.

THE STORY

The story of Cameron and Nathan captivated me. Cameron is the rich scion of a well to do family, never having to work a day in his life, with a sumptuous apartment in Manhattan when he decides to run away for a while and escape to Prague where he meets the handsome Aussie, Nathan, on vacation with his friends Lucy, his boss, and Ben, his co-worker.

As Cameron and Nathan get closer and closer Nathan’s ex, Elliot, pops back into his life. Or does he? Here’s where the story took on the turn I didn’t expect and floored me. The rich backdrop of the secondary characters of Lucy and Ben, and Cameron’s aunt Bev and his butler’s alter ego of Rowena the transvestite, make for a book I fell in love with. I couldn’t put it down. Yes, it was summer reading all right – but was it ever excellent reading! I really recommend this one.

THE WRITING

The writing is what really got to me. This starts out nice and slow, like a good orchestral piece and you’re thinking “nice” and then the other instruments start to chime in, each one at its exact moment in queue, until I was surrounded by a full crescendo of such rich characters, each one developed exactly right for the story, not overdone or lacking in any sense. Crazy Rowena and wild Bev, dedicated Lucy and Ben, and estranged Graham and Tony.

If you’ll notice I haven’t delved into Elliot much, and there’s a reason for that. I’ll leave Elliot for you to explore and to come to your own conclusions. Share them with me, if you will.

This book made me laugh, made me think, and it made me cry with its bittersweet tang, but most of all it really rocks!

Take a bow, Mr. Klehr.

THE AUTHOR

Kevin lives with his long-term partner in their humble apartment (affectionately named Sabrina), in Australia’s own ‘Emerald City,’ Sydney.

From an early age Kevin had a passion for writing, jotting down stories and plays until it came time to confront puberty. After dealing with pimple creams and facial hair, Kevin didn’t pick up a pen again until he was in his thirties. His handwritten manuscript was being committed to paper when his social circumstances changed, giving him no time to write. Concerned, his partner, Warren, snuck the notebook out to a friend who in turn came back and demanded Kevin finish his novel. It wasn’t long before Kevin’s active imagination was let loose again. The result was Drama Queens with Love Scenes, the first in a series of Afterlife tales.

Kevin is looking forward to thumping the keys on his laptop and churning out stories until it’s time for him to gain firsthand experience of the hereafter.

Let Your Heart Decide

Rating: 4.5 stars

WARNING: Please note this is a taboo romance featuring two brothers.

BLURB

New house, new job. A new start with his brother…. Two out of three isn’t bad, right? Rhys returns to his hometown and must face the brother he’s been avoiding for two years. In his heart, Rhys still hopes to recapture the bond they once shared.

Jake willingly offers him the hand of friendship, but Rhys is reluctant to confront their past, fearing it will only rip them apart again.

When Rhys sees ghostly figures in the grounds of a local historic house, it leads him to investigate their shocking past— and to face his heart’s true desire.

Please note this is a taboo romance featuring two brothers.

Let Your Heart Decide

Wow. OK. Let’s see where I begin. When I first heard about this book from one of my fave authors my ears perked up. I mean, taboo! Moth, meet flame. I’ve read a few taboo books and it all depends on how the whole subject is approached and what I found here really rocked, big time. Not only is this done in a really sensitive, honest manner but the whole paranormal angle is just brilliant. Yeah, I really couldn’t put this one down. I’m going to repeat this one more time:

Please note this is a taboo romance featuring two brothers.

THE CHARACTERS

Jake:

Still six feet of lean, manly man, his navy T-shirt clinging to his broad chest. Maybe he’d filled out, bulked up more. He walked to the front door, a hand sweeping over the top of his dark blond hair, his jean-clad legs taking large, confident strides towards me.

Rhys:

He didn’t respond at first but smiled absently, his gaze skimming down my damp chest to my towel-covered groin. Our eyes met again when he finished ogling me. His whole face exuded want, his pupils enlarged with need and lust. That was so wrong. Why did it feel so right? Jet interrupted the moment, nuzzling my balls and sniffing my blossoming erection. “Down, boy.” Jake grinned at me, then looked at the dog. “And you, Jet!” He chuckled as I turned and returned upstairs to dress.

THE STORY

Yeah, the story… This is a wonderfully written, sensitive story of two brothers, two years apart, that grow up together, experiencing all the wonderful experiences of two young boys, two young men, and form a bond that is beyond anything else. Their shared emotions, parental difficulties, coming of age hormonal urges, all shared in a spirit of love and caring and bonding beyond anything either of them could possibly hope for, however, there was one line they never crossed… until their mother’s death. Once that line was crossed things changed radically. It’s how Rhys and Jake deal with this, each in his own way, that lays the groundwork for Rhys’ return to their hometown after breaking up with his cad boyfriend, Myles. Add to this the paranormal element of Thomas and Samuel and their beyond the grave connection to Jake and Rhys and you have the ingredients for one riveting story. I was drawn in by Thomas and Samuel’s tragic story and yearned for the ending they deserved. Yes, definitely taboo, definitely hot, and definitely couldn’t put it down.

THE WRITING

The writing is amazing. The prologue grabbed ahold of me in a myriad of ways, all of them good. I’ll let your imagination go there. The rest of the story flows at a wonderful pace, the secondary characters, Phillip and Clare, and the two men from the past, Thomas and Samuel, so well written and developed that this book was such a pleasure to read. The beta reading and editing is top notch, no hiccups or WTF’s. All in all, this was a pleasure to read and I highly recommend it. A great love story, albeit not for everyone.

I must admit that with this book I am at quandary. There is a wonderful poem that weaves its way through this book, a really beautiful poem that drove me to tears. I’ve debated whether to quote it in this review and have opted not to. Please do yourself a favor, read this book, experience the poem throughout, and come home to it at the Appendix. I have some Kleenex right here.

BLURB

Jake Chivis is the descendant of Fire Elementals with a gift for psychometry, the ability to see memories from touching objects. After a bad breakup and trouble at work, Jake gave up his career as a detective in Detroit and moved to England to join a research program studying Elemental gifts at University College London. It seemed like the perfect way to escape his past and start over, and this time he’s vowed not to fall into the trap of dating a coworker. At least that’s the plan, until he meets Doctor Ilmarinen Gale.

Mari Gale is blond, sexy, relentlessly academic and comfortable in his own skin in a way Jake envies. After a handful of embarrassing encounters, Jake is ready to resign himself to staying under the radar, but when a colleague’s brother goes missing, he and Mari must work together to find him. As they dig into the inexplicable disappearance, Jake is impressed with Mari’s competence and unique skills, and even more impressed by his ability to wrap Jake around his finger. Together the unlikely pair discover murder, betrayal, secrets and just how high Mari can fan Jake’s flames.

CO-REVIEW

OJ

When my evil mastermind partner in crime and book hoarding enabler, Lisa Arbitrary, approached me about doing a Gay Guy/Straight Girl co-review for Breathing Betrayal I must admit I was somewhat hesitant about it. My TBR list is kilometers long and I’m trying to get with the deadlines… and then I read the blurb. Drats, foiled again because PNR !!! I am such a sucker for a good PNR story and the blurb read really good, so off I went. Man, am I glad I went! I am now hooked in for the remainder of this series as I want to see where it goes from here and also because good sex! Need I say more?

LISA

I think I’ve found a new series to follow. A character driven murder mystery that captivated me more with relationship development than plot, but it all fit well together.

THE CHARACTERS

OJ

Jake Chivis:

Lester in the print room said he was American, though Mari thought there was a slightly Hispanic look to his rough-cut, thick black hair and darkly handsome features. Maybe Romani, even? He couldn’t be sure. He was well built without looking chunky, except when he was bundled up in several layers of damp running gear, and almost as tall as Mari’s six-foot-two-inch frame, which was a plus. It got embarrassing trying to flirt with men who were forced to look up at him all the time. Not that he had any idea if Mr. Tall, Dark and Handsome was even that way inclined.

Ilmarinen (Mari) Gale:

Now during his morning runs, he was distracted by looking around to see if he’d catch sight of a particular slender figure whose long legs ate up the distance like the wind. Jake told himself that he was only looking so that he could avoid him, and thereby avoid having to make polite conversation. It definitely wasn’t because of the way the ridiculously tight Lycra leggings he wore outlined every muscle in his lean thighs or the way his perfect ass looked so tasty in them. No, not at all.

LISA

Both of these guys are surprisingly fresh. They are believable, unique and flawed. The romantic relationship surprised me over and over. It isn’t perfect and that made it special.

“We keep finding the most inappropriate places to make out, you know.”

Dr. Ilmarinen Gale (Mari)

What a name, right? And right from the start I liked him. He’s flamboyant, flirtatious, continental, mouthy, brilliant and secretly reserved. Fabulous contrasts in his character. His gift: Human-cyber Interface
And I just love Mari’s mom!

Sometimes it was a pain in the ass to be both a psychic and a skeptic.

Jake Chivas

Sturdy, solid, steady, stable, SEXY and quite un-confident. American. Not Mari’s typical pick. His gift: Psychometry, clairvoyance.

THE STORY

OJ

Ilmarinen (Mari) Gale and Jake Chivis find themselves at crossroads in their respective lives, both of them wanting to move on from previous, ill fitted, and ill fated, relationships and looking for new starts in their lives. Mari, one of the precious few pure human-cyber Interfaces—men and women able to engage their minds directly with telecommunications networks and the worldwide web and Jake, whose Elemental prowess is the psychic ability to relive past scenes by touching objects – experiencing the scenes through the eyes of the person who had held the object at the time in question, end up working at University College London as part of the Six Elements Worldwide Network (SEWN) universities program under Dr. Anthony Weston, whose brother, Phil, has mysteriously disappeared.

As Mari and Jake get drawn into finding the missing Phil Weston with their paranormal Elemental abilities, they are inexorably drawn together and caught in a web of deceit, mystery and espionage.

I must say, as story plots go, this is one of the better ones I have experience for a good PNR.

LISA

Dr. Ilmarinen Gale and former detective, Jake Chivas, are pressured to collaborate on a work related mystery. The two men have previously “noticed” each other running in the park and after a brief but flirty encounter they are both uncomfortable being put on such a task. But when the big boss makes the request it’s hard to say no. They’re just going to be professional, do the minimum, and get back to their normal routines. Yeah. Right.

As they delve deeper into a mysterious disappearance, they also delve deeper into each other’s pants. The mystery pales in the background for a good portion of the book while we get to explore these men and they explore each other. But it picks up eventually and it winds along with a couple of twists and turns. I can’t say it was this aspect of the book that riveted me, but that’s okay, because the relationship development held my interest. To be clear, the mystery was fine, fully fleshed, just not earth-shattering. The characters though, they rocked my world.

THE WRITING

OJ

The writing caught me totally flat footed. I truly did not expect such good storytelling craftsmanship as I found here. Right away, right from the Prologue into the story, it just flows smoothly making for a pleasant, well edited book. One gets to know the characters and what makes them tick, their desires and fears and hurdles they’ve experienced in the past. The writing is imbued with a good sense of humor and I could feel Mari’s pathos from his previous relationships and the performance hurdle he can’t seem to overcome. The sex scenes are smoking good and the role reversal between the two MC’s is delicious. All of the characters have a sufficient development to not leave us hanging and the exquisitely detailed descriptions of each character is so refreshing! The ending is perfect for a continuing series. I highly recommend this for a good, PNR read.

One suggestion, if I may be so bold, to these two talented authors: perhaps in future books the paranormal abilities can be involved in the MC’s sex scenes? I found myself craving this. It was kind of like a missing, tantalizing piece.

LISA

A straightforward and uncomplicated writing style made this a readable read. It wasn’t heady by any stretch. I particularly like the believable complexity the authors added to the sex scenes. I wasn’t expecting to find something surprising there. Well done.

No doubt about it, I’ll be looking for the next book in the series.

THE THREE QUESTIONS

For Lisa

1) Team Ilmari or Team Jake?
2) Talk to me about the sex scenes – whatcha think? Plusses/minuses?
3) Do you think Mari’s future will be interwoven in upcoming episodes?

For OJ

1) Did Mari’s “different” sexual needs work?
2) Cordiline? More of him? Yes? No? (Really, that’s one question.)
3) Believable PNR or hogwash?
